Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Wednesday said the country’s enemies do not pose an “existential threat”, but stressed that Israel would need to remain vigilant against its adversaries.
“We will
need, in the future as well, to remain vigilant against our enemies’ plots. We do not promise that this will be ‘the last war’,” Sa’ar was quoted as saying by Middle East Eye.
The remarks come as statements from Tehran, Washington and Tel Aviv on the conflict have swung between combative and conciliatory tones.
Israel and the United States, which continue to carry out joint airstrikes on Iran, have offered differing assessments of how the war could evolve, even as Tehran retaliates by targeting US bases in West Asia and striking Israeli cities and infrastructure.
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the conflict could last another two to three weeks. However, in a social media post on Wednesday, he claimed that Tehran had reached out seeking a ceasefire.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said Iran’s president “has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE!” He added that Washington would consider the proposal only when the Strait of Hormuz is “open, free, and clear”. “Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!” he wrote.
There was no independent confirmation of Trump’s claim.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that Israel would press ahead with its military campaign against Tehran, declaring that it would continue to “crush Iran’s terror regime”.
“The campaign is not over,” he said in a televised statement. “We will continue to crush the terror regime.”
