Green Day is set to take centre stage at the opening ceremony of Super Bowl LX, adding a strong rock presence to one of the biggest sporting events in the world. The NFL confirmed that the band will perform
at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, marking a homecoming moment for the California group as the league celebrates the Super Bowl’s 60th edition.
The band’s appearance is expected to be a highlight of the pregame festivities, with Green Day performing a mix of their most popular tracks as several former Super Bowl MVPs are honoured on the field ahead of kickoff. Known for their high-energy live shows, the group is likely to bring a charged atmosphere to the stadium before the game begins.

Green Day’s selection has also drawn attention because of the band’s outspoken disdain towards President Donald Trump and their political stance over the years. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has frequently criticised recent US administrations during concerts, at times altering lyrics during live performances to reflect his views. Their return to a Super Bowl stage comes at a time when music and politics continue to overlap in pop culture spaces.
In a statement, Billie Joe said, “We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard! We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”
Green Day joins Bad Bunny
The opening ceremony performance adds to a lineup that has already sparked conversation. Bad Bunny was announced earlier as the halftime headliner, a choice that generated mixed reactions. The global superstar has previously spoken about immigration issues and has voiced concern over how enforcement policies affect his audience, particularly fans from immigrant communities. The singer had previously said he avoided doing shows in the US as he was concerned the ICE would target his fans.
US President Donald Trump also spoke against Bad Bunny performing at the NFL in an interview with Newsmax. Trump said he had “never heard of” Bad Bunny. He said, “I don’t know who he is. I don’t know why they’re doing it. It’s, like, crazy. And then they blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”
Beyond Green Day and Bad Bunny, the NFL has also revealed a slate of artists for the national pregame performances. Brandi Carlile will sing “America the Beautiful,” Coco Jones is set to perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and Charlie Puth will handle the national anthem duties. Together, the lineup reflects a wide mix of genres and voices.
