Jio Platforms IPO: Jio Platforms’ entry into the stock market has turned into a landmark event for India’s capital markets, with the Reliance Industries-backed digital services company setting multiple
records across fundraising, investor participation and subscription demand. The Rs 30,188-crore initial public offering (IPO) surpassed Hyundai Motor India’s Rs 27,870-crore issue in 2024 to become India’s largest public offering.
The offering also attracted more than 1.38 crore applications, witnessed substantial demand from institutional investors and was fully subscribed within 100 minutes of opening.
Its successful listing on Dalal Street has further drawn attention to the company’s market value. At the listing, Jio Platforms commanded a market capitalisation of around Rs 12.51 lakh crore on the BSE, placing it ahead of Bharti Airtel and behind only its parent, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL). RIL retained the top position among India’s listed companies, with a market valuation of about Rs 15.90 lakh crore.
Jio Platforms IPO: 13 milestones that stand out
1. Investor applications crossed Record 1.38 crore
The number of applications emerged as one of the most striking features of the Jio Platforms IPO, the country’s biggest initial public offering. Jio Platforms received more than 1.38 crore applications, comfortably surpassing the previous Indian IPO record of 97.33 lakh. The response highlighted the breadth of investor interest in the company, with participation extending across retail investors, high-net-worth individuals, institutions and eligible Reliance Industries shareholders.
2. Retail participation set a new benchmark
Retail investors accounted for more than 1.05 crore applications. The retail portion was subscribed 2.72 times, indicating demand beyond the shares reserved for individual investors. The scale of participation was particularly notable for an offering of Jio’s size.
3. The public issue attracted bids worth nearly Rs 5 lakh crore
The public portion of the offering attracted bids worth about Rs 4.9 lakh crore. The scale of demand far exceeded the value of shares available for subscription, making the issue a major test of the depth and capacity of India’s primary market.
4. Institutional investors placed substantial bets
Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) bid for shares worth about Rs 3.87 lakh crore, with their reserved portion subscribed 70.55 times. The response demonstrated the scale of institutional interest in Jio Platforms and its position in India’s telecommunications and digital services markets.
5. The anchor book drew significant interest before the public issue
Jio Platforms’ anchor book attracted bids worth about Rs 2.5 lakh crore against an allocation of around Rs 8,110 crore. The demand came ahead of the public subscription period and reflected interest from large investors, including global asset managers and domestic financial institutions.
6. Existing Reliance Industries shareholders participated in large numbers
The shareholder reservation category received more than 21 lakh applications. Eligible shareholders of Reliance Industries were offered a separate route to participate in the IPO, linking the public issue to the investor base of Jio’s parent company.
7. Shareholder bids exceeded the amount reserved by a wide margin
Bids under the shareholder reservation category were valued at about Rs 19,000 crore, compared with a reservation of up to Rs 2,500 crore. The response underscored the interest among eligible Reliance Industries shareholders in participating in Jio Platforms’ stock market debut.
8. High-net-worth investors added to the demand
Applications from the small high-net-worth individual (sHNI) category crossed 5.75 lakh, while applications from the large HNI category exceeded 3.5 lakh. These categories cover non-institutional applications of Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh and those above Rs 10 lakh, respectively. Their participation showed that demand was not limited to retail investors and large institutions.
9. The IPO reached full subscription rapidly
Jio Platforms’ IPO was fully subscribed within 100 minutes of opening on October 21. The qualified institutional buyer portion was subscribed within the first 10 minutes, reflecting strong early demand from large investors. By the end of the first day, the overall issue had been subscribed 3.16 times.
10. Jio overtook Hyundai Motor India in issue size
With an issue size of Rs 30,188 crore, Jio Platforms moved ahead of Hyundai Motor India’s Rs 27,870-crore IPO to become India’s largest public offering. The milestone reflects the growing scale of India’s equity fundraising market and the ability of large companies to access substantial pools of investor capital.
11. The offering comprised fresh shares without an offer for sale
Unlike IPOs that combine fresh share issuance with an offer for sale by existing shareholders, Jio Platforms’ offering comprised fresh equity shares. About 27 crore new shares were issued. The proceeds are intended primarily to repay or prepay borrowings at Reliance Jio Infocomm, with the balance allocated to general corporate purposes.
12. Its implied valuation exceeded $100 billion
Jio Platforms entered the public market with an implied equity valuation above $100 billion at the IPO price. The valuation reflects the scale of its telecommunications and digital services businesses, as well as investor expectations surrounding India’s expanding digital economy.
13. Shares debuted at a substantial 21.4% premium
Jio Platforms shares listed at Rs 1,358 on both the BSE and NSE on Wednesday, October 28, against an issue price of Rs 1,119. That represented a listing premium of 21.36%. At the listing price, the company commanded a market capitalisation of about Rs 12.5 lakh crore, placing it among India’s most valuable listed companies.
