Playing With Injury
GT skipper revealed that he twisted his ankle during his brilliant innings but battled through the discomfort to lead his side to a commanding 77-run win in the Indian Premier League on Saturday.
Gill produced a sparkling knock of 84 from just 44 deliveries, blending elegant strokeplay with aggressive intent as Gujarat Titans piled up a formidable 229/4 after being put in to bat. His innings included nine boundaries and three sixes, and he also shared a massive 118-run opening stand with Sai Sudharsan, who contributed 55 off 36 balls.
Despite appearing troubled midway through his innings, Gill continued to bat fluently and later explained the issue during the post-match presentation.
“While taking a run, I think I twisted my ankle a little bit. It was painful. But I think after half an hour or so, it settled down,” Gill said.
The Gujarat skipper expressed satisfaction with his team’s overall performance, calling it their most complete outing of the season so far.
“Very happy (for the win). Next game is at home and hopefully we will have another good match,” he added.
‘All-Round Display’
Gill further explained that the Titans had discussed internally the need to produce a near-perfect all-round display before the game. “Yeah, definitely (perfect match). Even before this match, we had a conversation that till now I don’t think we had a perfect match. I think this was a clean win for us. We got 10-15 extra, it was not easy to hit sixes or boundaries (against the spinners).”
The Titans backed up their batting dominance with an excellent bowling effort, dismissing Rajasthan Royals for 152 in just 16.3 overs. Rashid Khan starred with the ball, claiming 4/33, while Jason Holder chipped in with 3/12.
Gill praised his pace attack’s aggressive approach in the powerplay overs. “Always knew if we got a couple of wickets in the powerplay, we would have a good game.”
On using Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada extensively early on, he said, “We believe it is important to hold fort up front. If we take wickets, it gives the bowlers more chance to attack through the middle. You have to keep taking wickets – there is no other way.”
