In the heart of India’s capital, Delhi, lies a house that’s no larger than six square yards — a space smaller than a typical room. Yet, this tiny structure has become somewhat of a local legend, drawing
curious visitors from across the city. Often dubbed ‘the little wonder of Delhi’, this house is believed to be the smallest residence in the city, and its origin story is just as fascinating as its size.
When the Local18 team visited the site, the house was locked, and no one from the family was present. However, neighbours were more than willing to share the story behind this unique home.
The six-yard house is located in Lane No. 63, just past the main market of Sant Nagar, in Jharoda village, Burari. It’s so well known in the area that simply asking for ‘the six-yard house’ will lead you straight to it.
The Tiny House Of Delhi
A family of four currently lives here. Suman, a long-time resident of the area, shared that the house was constructed around 2014–2015. At the time, the land at the end of the street was vacant and sold for as little as Rs 15,000 – Rs 20,000. Today, thanks to the fame of the house, its value has skyrocketed to over Rs 14 lakh.
According to Suman, the house is rented by a family of four, husband, wife, and their two sons. The wife’s name is Pinky, and her husband Sanjay, originally from Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), works as a driver for a private company in Gurgaon.
The family moved into the house in 2020, and they were also residing there during the lockdown. The monthly rent is just Rs 3,500.
How Was The House Built?
Ritesh, another local resident, explained that the original 6-yard plot was sold by a local property dealer to a man named Arun. Arun, a mason by profession, designed and constructed the three-storey building himself. Neighbour Mukesh added that the house was later purchased by Pawan Kumar alias Sonu around four years ago, though the title remained in Arun Kumar’s name. After selling it, Arun seemingly disappeared, and no one knows his current whereabouts.
Interestingly, the house is triangular in shape, with two narrow balconies (two-and-a-half feet wide) on adjacent roads, which slightly increased the usable space. While the ground floor is six yards, the upper levels expand to around 12 yards due to this clever design. The house was nearly demolished by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), but the action was eventually halted. Electricity board officials have even confirmed, through measurements, that the base area is indeed only six yards.
What’s Inside The Tiny House?
Neighbour Bhagwan Devi described the layout. As soon as you open the main door, stairs lead directly to the first floor, where there’s a bedroom with a single bed, side table with a TV, and a ceiling fan; they’ve recently added an AC as well.
The floor is covered with stone tiles, and there’s a small attached bathroom.
As you climb up from the bedroom, you reach the kitchen and sitting area. The top floor houses another bathroom and toilet, with a water tank installed at the roof level. The entire house is essentially built around a staircase, and features five windows, all opening on one side.
This six-yard house may be tiny, but it stands tall as a symbol of smart design, resourcefulness, and urban curiosity, proof that even the smallest spaces can create the biggest stories.
