Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian landed in New Delhi on Friday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit being hosted by India. Ahead of the summit, he was hosted by President Droupadi Murmu, becoming the only
dignitary hosted by the Rashtrapati Bhavan during the summit.
Pezeshkian, who arrived in the national capital with his daughter Zahra, held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the discussions, the two leaders spoke about India-Iran relations and the ongoing war in West Asia.
The visit comes at a critical time when Iran and the US-Israel alliance are locked in conflict, which has led to disruption of energy supplies across the world.
President Murmu welcomed her Iranian counterpart, expressing appreciation for the support extended by Tehran for India’s BRICS presidency. According to a statement from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, “The two leaders discussed the long-standing bonds of friendship between Iran and India, including strong cultural and people-to-people ties,”.
During the meeting, Murmu reiterated India’s commitment to the pursuit of enduring peace in the region.
PM Modi-Pezeshkian Meet
Prime Minister Modi and Pezeshkian held a bilateral meeting on Saturday, during which the former raised the issue of the safety of seafarers in the wake of disruptions in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on X, PM Modi wrote: “From Bishkek to Delhi, the productive discussions continue. Happy to have met Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of Iran. This visit is more special because it is his first visit to India.”

PM Modi said the discussions also focussed on the prevailing situation in West Asia, while also affirming New Delhi’s commitment to the pursuit of enduring peace in the region.
“We talked about the India-Iran friendship. We believe that we should move forward with a long-term and win-win strategy. The prevailing situation in the region was also discussed. India remains steadfast in its commitment to the pursuit of enduring peace”.
Pezeshkian’s Daughter At BRICS Bazaar
Union Minister Annpurna Devi escorted Iranian President’s daughter Zahra to the BRICS Bazaar, which was held at the Crafts Museum adjoining Bharat Mandapam.
