Amid rising geopolitical tensions, visa-related uncertainties, and growing concerns about student safety, many Indian students are re-evaluating their choices of study destinations abroad. Recent trends
show that Indian students are increasingly looking beyond traditional destinations like the US, UK, and Canada and are giving greater importance to stability, transparent visa rules, and long-term security.
Data from the Ministry of Education shows a notable decline in the number of Indian students pursuing higher education overseas over the past three years. In 2023, over 9 lakh students went abroad to study, but by 2025 this figure had fallen to about 6.26 lakh, reflecting a 31% drop.
As per the Bureau of Immigration, the count of Indian students going abroad for higher studies has consistently decreased from 9,08,364 in 2023 to 7,70,127 in 2024, and further down to 6,26,606 in 2025. Among the key reasons behind this trend are concerns about the safety of international students, particularly in countries where incidents of discrimination and attacks have been on the rise.
