Forest Department officials in Karwar have intercepted a migratory seagull equipped with a GPS tracking device labelled with Chinese scientific credentials. The discovery has prompted a joint investigation
by the Forest Department, local police, and naval authorities.
The bird was spotted behind Thimmakka Garden in Karwar city. Local observers noticed a small electronic device strapped to the seagull’s back, leading to its capture by Forest Department personnel.
Upon closer inspection, the GPS tracker was found to bear the inscription: “Centre for Eco-Environment Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences.”
Scientific Research or Security Concern?
Initial assessments suggest the device was likely installed by Chinese researchers to monitor the bird’s migratory patterns, feeding habits, and movement corridors. Such tracking is a common practice in international avian research.
However, given Karwar’s strategic coastal importance since it is home to major naval installations, local authorities are taking no chances.
The bird has been moved to the Marine Forest Division office and is currently under the care of veterinarians to ensure its health. The Karwar City Police and Naval Police have initiated a formal inquiry to verify the authenticity of the device and ensure there are no security implications. Forest officials are reportedly in the process of contacting the Chinese Academy of Sciences to verify the tracking project.
Current Status
The seagull is being kept in a secure environment while the investigation continues. Authorities are working to determine if the bird’s arrival in Karwar was part of a documented migratory route or an anomaly.
