Kajal Chaudhary, a 24-year-old SWAT commando of Delhi Police’s special cell, died at a hospital in Ghaziabad on Tuesday, five days after her husband allegedly assaulted her with a dumbbell and slammed
her head against a door frame.
The incident took place after an argument broke out between Kajal and her husband, Ankur Chaudhary, over domestic issues and dowry.
After attacking Kajal, Ankur allegedly called his brother-in-law, Nikhil, who is a constable in the Delhi Police, and told him that he had killed Kajal.
According to The Times of India (TOI), Nikhil said the couple had a heated argument on January 22.
“My sister took the phone and tried to explain what had happened. Chaudhary got offended by some remarks she made. He snatched the phone and asked me to record the conversation as evidence, saying he was going to kill my sister. I then heard her screaming before the call got disconnected,” Nikhil was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.
After the attack, Ankur reportedly took Kajal to a nearby hospital for treatment. As her condition worsened, her family shifted her to a hospital in Ghaziabad two days later. Despite medical efforts, Kajal succumbed to her injuries.
“About five minutes later, Chaudhary called again and told me that he had killed my sister and that I should come to Delhi to claim her body. When I reached Delhi around midnight, his family had already arrived and he had admitted my sister to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her brain dead,” he added.
Her post-mortem examination was conducted on Tuesday, and police said further action would be taken based on the findings of the autopsy and the ongoing investigation, as per the TOI report.
Ankur, who worked as a clerk in the ministry of Defence, was arrested on the night of the incident. The husband and wife were originally from Ganaur in Haryana. They got married in November 2023, and also have a one-and-a-half-year-old son.
