Akshay Kumar spoke about his marriage to Twinkle Khanna, revealing the interesting circumstances that led to their union. The couple first crossed paths on film sets in the 1990s and what started as a casual
connection slowly grew into a serious bond. Over time, they decided to keep their personal life private, ultimately marrying in a quiet, intimate ceremony.
In a lighthearted revelation, Akshay shared that Twinkle had given him one unusual condition before agreeing to marry him. During that period, Twinkle’s acting career was going through a rough patch, with several films failing to succeed at the box office. When Akshay proposed, Twinkle jokingly said she would only marry him if her film Mela flopped. She was confident it would be a hit, but the film’s failure changed everything.
On Aap Ki Adalat, Akshay said, “She herself told me she did 12 movies and only one clicked. Unko actually writer banna tha. She wanted to be a chartered accountant. She was a very intelligent child. She had no shauk (hobby) about movies, but the situation so happened that she entered the industry.”
How Aamir Khan Unknowingly Played Cupid
Twinkle Khanna, the daughter of the legendary Rajesh Khanna and veteran actress Dimple Kapadia, was almost stepping away from films after a series of flops. Her movie Mela, co-starring Aamir Khan, failed at the box office, which indirectly set the stage for her marriage with Akshay. The actor humourously credited Aamir for this twist of fate, saying, “Sorry Aamir Khan sahab, that film of yours didn’t work. But I got married because of you.”
A Wedding Kept Under Wraps
Akshay and Twinkle’s wedding was a secret affair. The couple had been filming separately until 6 pm on their wedding day. Akshay recalled, “No, we didn’t invite anybody, nor did I tell anybody. I was shooting at that time. By 6 pm, she also returned from her shooting and we married on a friend’s terrace.” Twinkle even called Aamir Khan around 4 pm, asking him to attend the wedding that very evening, leaving him completely surprised. Akshay laughed while recalling the moment: “Kyon nahin ho sakti hai. Shaadiyan, affair jo hote hain, woh jaldi hi hote hain. Usko bolte hain, chat mangni, pat byaah.”
From a Short-Term Fling to Lasting Love
Their love story officially began during the filming of International Khiladi in 1999. Initially, Twinkle considered it a brief 15-day fling while recovering from a previous long-term relationship. However, as time passed, their bond deepened and evolved into a lifelong commitment.
The couple tied the knot on January 7, 2001, in an intimate ceremony attended by around 50 close friends and family members. Today, Akshay and Twinkle are proud parents to two children, Aarav and Nitara, and continue to be one of Bollywood’s most admired couples, balancing their personal life, family, and professional commitments with humour, love and grace.
