The Election Commission has found prima facie evidence of EVM button taping at some polling booths in West Bengal, sources said on Wednesday, amid allegations of irregularities during the second phase
of Assembly elections.
According to EC sources, a detailed report has been sought from the presiding officer concerned. Officials said the issue involving the sticker or tape on EVM buttons was resolved quickly and polling is now proceeding smoothly.
Repoll Likely If Allegations Proven
The development comes after the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer said booths where such tampering is confirmed would undergo repolling. The assurance followed allegations by the BJP that voters were unable to select their preferred candidate in parts of the Diamond Harbour constituency.
BJP leaders had claimed that the party’s option on EVMs was allegedly blocked using tape at multiple booths in Falta, demanding immediate repoll in those areas.
Voting Continues Across State
Polling for 142 seats in the second phase is underway, with voter turnout nearing 40 per cent by late morning, according to official data. Authorities said corrective steps were taken swiftly in affected booths and voting has continued without further disruption.
The Election Commission is expected to take a final call on repolling after reviewing the detailed reports from ground officials.
