Indian men’s team head coach Gautam Gambhir and star wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson were seen having a chat after the latter was benched following a hat-trick of poor results against Ireland and England,
which in turn paved the way for 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s debut.
There was another story unfolding alongside the debut, that of the man who made way. Moments after India confirmed Sooryavanshi’s senior international debut for the second T20I against England, television cameras captured Gambhir in conversation with Samson on the outfield.
There was no audio of the exchange and there is little value in speculating about what was said. Yet the visuals carried significance because of the context. Samson wasn’t just another cricketer dropped after a lean patch.

But Sooryavanshi’s debut didn’t come off well, as he scored 14 runs off 10 balls before being stumped off Will Jacks.
Samson had been one of the batters who enjoyed the backing of Gambhir throughout India’s T20 World Cup campaign and one of the cricketers the team management continued to support even as calls for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion grew louder.
Earlier this year, after Samson’s unbeaten 97 against the West Indies in the T20 World Cup, Gambhir had described him as a ‘world-class player’ and said that the innings vindicated the team’s decision to back him.
Gambhir had lauded Samson’s talent as well, composure and the faith the management had always placed in his abilities. That context made Saturday’s images all the more poignant: the same coach who had championed Samson now found himself standing beside him on the day India chose to move in a different direction.
