Monsoon activity has turned patchy across India, with the rain-bearing trough shifting away from Delhi-NCR and easing over Maharashtra even as Punjab, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat brace for heavy
showers today. Mumbai and Thane saw intermittent rain on Monday morning, while forecasts for Delhi remain conflicting.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh alerts for several states, predicting thunderstorms and locally heavy rainfall through the day. In western India, Maharashtra’s rain has grown patchy after a strong first fortnight of August, with some regions still awaiting a good spell.
Meanwhile, air quality in the capital continues to hold steady in the “satisfactory” range even as temperatures inch above normal.
Is Delhi Headed For Rain, Or A Dry Spell?
Reports disagree. Live Hindustan reports that the monsoon axis has moved toward the Himalayan foothills, reducing monsoon activity over Delhi-NCR and ruling out heavy rain for the next several days — expect light cloud cover, isolated drizzle at best, and a mild rise in temperature instead.
On Sunday, Safdarjung recorded a maximum of 34.4°C (0.6°C above normal) and a minimum of 27.8°C (1.3°C above normal); Monday’s high is pegged at 33–35°C.
Live Hindustan also notes Delhi hasn’t seen good rain since August 11 despite repeated IMD alerts that didn’t pan out.
Economic Times, however, cites IMD as forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms in Delhi today, with a high near 34°C and a low near 28°C.
How Clean Is Delhi’s Air Right Now?
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) put Delhi’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) at 92 on Sunday — “satisfactory,” and roughly unchanged from the day before, per Live Hindustan.
The board expects AQI to hold in this range over the next two days. (CPCB bands: 0–50 Good, 51–100 Satisfactory, 101–200 Moderate, 201–300 Poor, 301–400 Very Poor, 401–500 Severe.) A shift toward northerly winds through the week is also expected to cut humidity levels in the capital.
Will Mumbai And Maharashtra See More Rain This Week?
Mumbai and Thane recorded intermittent heavy rain on Monday morning. Beyond the city, the picture varies sharply by region:
• Konkan: Mixed cloudy-to-dry conditions. Raigad and Ratnagiri are under a yellow alert for heavy to very heavy rain; Palghar, Thane, Mumbai and Sindhudurg have no alert.
• North Maharashtra: Light to moderate rain expected over Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik and the adjoining ghats, after a recent lull.
• West Maharashtra: Pune, Kolhapur and Satara ghats remain under a yellow alert for heavy to very heavy showers, though intensity is expected to ease from tomorrow, with clearer, warmer spells likely.
• Marathwada: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur and Dharashiv can expect light to moderate rain; no heavy-rain alert is in force.
• Vidarbha: Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha and Washim are largely alert-free, with cloudy-to-dry conditions and some sunshine.
Economic Times separately describes Maharashtra as likely to see breezy, partly sunny conditions today with afternoon showers, and warns of possible thunderstorms and localised heavy rain in some areas — broadly consistent with the region-by-region picture above, though less granular.
