Kolkata, Aug 5 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday carried out surprise inspections at two police stations in Kolkata, where he reviewed the functioning of women’s help desks
and cybercrime complaint mechanisms, and later inspected the state Fire and Emergency Services headquarters, a senior officer said.
Adhikari, who also holds the Home portfolio, held a meeting with the Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand later.
The chief minister first visited the Watgunge police station and then the Ikbalpore police station in the western part of the city.
He reviewed the infrastructure, examined official records and enquired about the deployment of women police personnel, they said.
The chief minister also inspected the facilities available at the women’s help desks, interacted with police personnel posted there and sought details about the registration and handling of cybercrime complaints involving women.
He enquired about the procedure for lodging cybercrime complaints, the officers responsible for handling such cases and the overall functioning of the help desks.
“These visits were not part of the chief minister’s scheduled programme for the day,” an official said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Port Division) Harikrishna Pai accompanied the chief minister during the visits.
Adhikari later visited Lalbazar, the headquarters of Kolkata Police, where he held a brief meeting with Commissioner of Police Ajay Kumar Nand, officials said.
He also inspected the headquarters of the Fire and Emergency Services Department on Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata, accompanied by Additional Chief Secretary Khalil Ahmed and Director General of West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Anuj Sharma.
During the visit, Adhikari reviewed the department’s infrastructure and preparedness, seeking details about the number of fire tenders kept ready for emergency response and the available manpower, officials said.
The chief minister undertook the inspections to personally assess the functioning and preparedness of the police stations and the fire department, they added. PTI SCH NN
