A giant crater that appeared overnight near Dehradun’s newly rebuilt ₹16-crore Nanda Ki Chowki bridge has unleashed a flood of criticism online, with social media users questioning construction quality
and demanding accountability.
Heavy rainfall on the night of July 27 washed away part of the approach road leading to the bridge in Prem Nagar. The structure, rebuilt by the Uttarakhand Public Works Department with NHAI funding after the previous bridge collapsed during the 2025 monsoon, had barely been opened before fresh damage grabbed headlines.
Videos and photos of the crater quickly went viral, with many users claiming that the project had failed its very first major test. One widely shared post sarcastically remarked, “₹16 crore. 16 days. That is all it lasted.”
Another viral tweet by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) took a direct swipe at the government, saying, “This pothole on the new bridge in Dehradun leads straight to the CM’s office. So, if this isn’t corruption, then what should we call it?”
Another viral post took a sarcastic dig at the construction, saying: “Yah bhrashtachar thodi hai, yah space technology hai (This isn’t corruption; this is space technology).”
A third post mocked the damaged bridge with biting satire: “स्पेस टेक्नोलॉजी से बनी इस तरह की सड़कें भारत में ही बन सकती हैं, जहां पुल ने आत्महत्या करने की कोशिश की। देहरादून के नंदा की चौकी पर हाल ही में बना नया पुल भारी बारिश का दबाव नहीं झेल सका और ध्वस्त हो गया। (“Roads built with this kind of ‘space technology’ can only exist in India, where even bridges seem to attempt suicide. The newly built bridge at Nanda Ki Chowki in Dehradun couldn’t withstand the pressure of heavy rain and gave way.”)
However, district authorities have urged people not to jump to conclusions. According to reports, officials who inspected the site clarified that the bridge itself has not suffered any structural damage. According to officials, only the approach road was eroded due to heavy rain, and repair work was expected to restore traffic within three to four hours.

Police also confirmed that while the bridge remains safe, access had to be temporarily restricted for smaller vehicles until the damaged section of the road was repaired.
Even so, the incident has reignited concerns over the quality of infrastructure projects in regions prone to extreme weather. Users on X argue that if a newly constructed approach road cannot withstand the season’s first major rainfall, it raises uncomfortable questions about planning, execution and quality control.
The controversy comes as Uttarakhand continues to battle intense monsoon conditions. An orange rain alert remains in place across several districts, schools have been shut, and multiple roads have been affected by landslides and waterlogging.
