In the heart of the Mexico’s Chihuahua Desert lies a mysterious place known as the ‘Zone of Silence,’ where all electronic devices mysteriously stop working. Just 25 miles away from populated areas where all devices function
normally, this barren desert cuts visitors off from the entire world. Despite extensive studies, scientists are yet to explain why radio frequencies and electronic equipment fail here.
How Was the Zone Discovered?
Research on the ‘Zone of Silence’ began in 1970 after an American missile inexplicably crashed in the desert. A US Air Force team sent to investigate found that not only GPS devices but all electronic equipment ceased functioning. TV signals, radio waves, shortwave, and satellite transmissions could not penetrate the area, leading the team to name it the Zone of Silence.
The desert has long been classified as a ‘dark zone’ due to its unique properties. Signals from television, radio, shortwave, and satellites cannot reach the area, rendering all electronic devices useless. Despite decades of research, the exact cause of this phenomenon remains unknown.

Research Lab
Following the American investigation, the Mexican government established a large laboratory in the Chihuahua Desert, known simply as ‘The Zone’. The lab was set up to study the desert’s unique properties, including its vegetation and insect life. Speculation abounds that the government also conducts secret research here, taking advantage of the absence of signals.
Scientists believe the Zone of Silence has magnetic properties, which may explain why electronics fail, although the origin of these properties remains a mystery.
Research indicates that millions of years ago, this area was once a sea called the Sea of Thetis. It is thought that the desert’s current surface was once part of this ancient seabed.

Strange Sightings by Locals
Local residents claim the desert is home to supernatural powers or aliens. They report seeing unusual glows in the sky and vegetation that appears to burn spontaneously. A TV crew visiting the area even reported being guided out by mysterious figures wearing long, raincoat-like clothing with their faces concealed.
The Zone of Silence continues to intrigue scientists, researchers, and thrill-seekers alike, remaining one of the world’s most enigmatic and unexplained regions.
