US President Donald Trump has a newfound obsession. He has floated the idea of renaming either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean as ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas’.
This is yet another push to extend
US dominance over geographical names.
Trump made the remarks during a campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, on Saturday, October 10, while he was addressing the crowds ahead of the November midterm elections.
“We need a river. We need an ocean,” Trump said. “We call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas,’ something like that,” he said, drawing chuckles from the audience, The Washington Post reported.
Trump’s remarks came as he invoked his earlier decisions to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America and Lake Ontario as Lake America.
According to The Washington Post, the US President stressed that he wanted an ocean and a major river to be renamed before leaving office.
“Before I get out, I think we should have an ocean. And we need a great river,” Trump said.
Trump’s Earlier Renaming Decisions
Last year, Trump announced renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America last year, a move that triggered a diplomatic row with Mexico.
Back in August, Trump also renamed Lake Ontario, which sits between the US state of New York and Canada, as Lake America. The move came amid trade tensions between the two countries.
This is not the end of the story.
Amid the war with Iran, Trump had said in a post on Truth Social that the strategic Strait of Hormuz should be renamed as the ‘Trump Strait‘.
The Strait of Hormuz emerged as a key flashpoint between the US and Iran, after the latter blocked the waterway in the wake of joint US-Israeli strikes, a move that sent shockwaves through global economies.
