Built at a cost of nearly Rs 4,000 crore, the newly inaugurated terminal is India’s first nature-inspired airport terminal.
Designed to reflect the region’s natural landscape, the facility is expected to substantially enhance passenger handling capacity and improve connectivity, while boosting tourism, trade and economic activity in Assam and neighbouring states.
The Prime Minister also spoke about his personal connect with the state, crediting the people of Assam and the Northeast for motivating his vision of regional development.
“My attachment to the soil of Assam, the love and affection of the people here, especially the love of the mothers and sisters of Assam and the Northeast, continuously inspire me and strengthen our resolve for the development of the Northeast. Today, a new chapter is being added to Assam’s development,” he said.
As part of his two-day visit, the Prime Minister will pay homage to the martyrs of the 1979 Assam Movement at the Swahid Smarak Kshetra, built in memory of 860 people who laid down their lives during the agitation.
On Sunday, PM Modi will interact with 25 students from various schools under the ‘Pariksha pe Charcha’ programme during a 30-minute session aboard the cruise vessel ‘Charaideo’ on the Brahmaputra river.
He will then travel to Dibrugarh and onward to Namrup, where he is set to lay the foundation stone of a ₹12,000 crore ammonia-urea fertiliser plant. The project is expected to give a significant boost to industrial development and employment in the state. The Prime Minister will also address a public gathering there before concluding his Assam visit.
