US President Donald Trump on Wednesday night said that the US was not currently holding negotiations with Iran to end the conflict that began in February this year, adding that “something will happen fairly
soon”.
Speaking to US broadcaster NewsNation after arriving at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, aboard Air Force One on Wednesday night, Trump was accompanied by former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield, who travelled with the president for a campaign rally in South Carolina backing Republican Senator Darline Graham ahead of the midterm elections.
Holyfield’s appearance was part of Trump’s broader effort to bring prominent sporting figures to campaign events. The two have been friends for decades, and Trump previously served as a guest commentator for Holyfield’s 2021 bout against Brazilian mixed martial artist Vitor Belfort.
“Most people seem to think it’s after the election… we’re going to see what happens. (The US is not negotiating with Iran) something will happen fairly soon,” Trump told the broadcaster before boarding Air Force One.
President Trump tonight tells me the U.S. is not negotiating with Iran and something will happen “fairly soon.”

The Republican President had earlier indicated that the US might refrain from launching attacks on Iran before the midterm elections.
It remains unclear whether Trump will abandon that position. When pressed by NewsNation’s Libbey Dean on the possibility, he said: “We’re gonna see what happens.”
