Planning to travel home for the festive season but missed booking your train ticket two months in advance? There may still be a way to get a confirmed seat through Tatkal, Premium Tatkal or special trains.
But these last-minute options could cost passengers more money and, in some cases, more time too.
With trains witnessing massive demand during festivals such as Diwali and Chhath, regular tickets on popular routes are often booked out weeks or even months in advance. Passengers who fail to secure a reservation when booking opens are usually left looking for alternative options closer to their travel date.
Tatkal Tickets: A Last-Minute Option
The Tatkal scheme offers passengers an opportunity to book tickets shortly before their journey. However, Tatkal tickets come with additional charges over and above the regular fare, making them more expensive than tickets booked through the normal reservation system.
Getting a Tatkal ticket can also be a challenge during the festive rush, with thousands of passengers trying to book a limited number of seats as soon as reservations open.
Premium Tatkal
Premium Tatkal offers another option for those willing to pay more for a last-minute ticket. Unlike regular Tatkal, fares under the Premium Tatkal scheme can vary depending on demand and are generally significantly higher than regular ticket prices.
For passengers travelling during the peak festive season, this means that waiting until the last moment could put a bigger burden on their pockets.
Special Trains Offer More Seats
To manage the massive festive rush, the government and Indian Railways also run special trains on several busy routes. These trains provide additional seats to passengers travelling to their hometowns during the festival season.
However, special trains may not always operate according to the timings passengers expect. Their schedules can vary, and delays are often a concern, particularly during periods of heavy rail traffic and congestion on busy routes.
This means passengers choosing special trains may have to spend more time on their journey or face uncertainty over arrival and departure timings.
Cost Of Missing Advance Booking Window
For travellers, the message is simple: missing the booking window does not necessarily mean missing the journey. Tatkal and Premium Tatkal tickets, along with special trains, can still help passengers reach home during the festive season.
But the convenience comes at a price. While Tatkal and Premium Tatkal can mean paying more than the regular fare, special trains may require passengers to compromise on time and convenience.
