Karnataka Chief Minister-designate and state Congress president DK Shivakumar on Tuesday expressed gratitude to the Gandhi family for what he described as their defining role in shaping his political journey,
a day ahead of his swearing-in ceremony as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
In a post on X, Shivakumar said the Gandhi family had influenced his political life not just through leadership, but through the trust and confidence they had shown in him over the years.
He said he would continue to work “with sincerity and commitment” to build a “progressive, inclusive and prosperous Karnataka” under their leadership and with the blessings of the people of the state.
Shivakumar, who was officially elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party on May 30, is scheduled to take oath as Chief Minister along with members of his Council of Ministers at 4.05 pm on June 3 at the Lok Bhavan premises, news agency PTI reported.
“The Gandhi family has played a defining role in my political journey, not merely through leadership, but through the faith they placed in me at different stages of my life,” Shivakumar wrote in his post.
PRAISE FOR RAJIV GANDHI
Remembering former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Shivakumar said he often reflected on how Rajiv Gandhi recognised his potential at an early stage in his political career.
“I often reflect on Shri Rajiv Gandhi avaru, who saw potential in a young worker even before I could see it in myself. His encouragement gave me the confidence to dream bigger and dedicate myself to public service,” he said.
He further added, “The greatest leaders are those who identify possibilities in others and inspire them to rise beyond their own expectations. Rajiv Gandhi did exactly that for me.”
Shivakumar also said that Rajiv Gandhi’s encouragement had given him the confidence to pursue public service and larger political responsibilities.
SONIA GANDHI’S SUPPORT DURING DIFFICULT TIMES
Shivakumar also spoke about Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and said she taught him an important lesson in leadership through her support during challenging phases of his career.
“True leaders do not stand by you only during moments of success; they stand beside you during your most difficult times, offering strength, encouragement and unwavering support,” he wrote.
“Her faith in me during challenging phases of my journey is something I will always cherish,” he added.
Shivakumar described Sonia Gandhi’s support as a defining aspect of leadership and said her trust in him during difficult moments remained deeply meaningful to him.
RAHUL, PRIYANKA GANDHI MENTIONED IN POST
The Karnataka Chief Minister-designate also praised Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, calling him a constant source of inspiration and guidance.
“His willingness to listen, his conviction in democratic values, and his vision for a more inclusive and compassionate India continue to motivate leaders like me,” Shivakumar said.
“His support has been a strong pillar throughout my public life,” he added.
Shivakumar also referred to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as approachable and encouraging.
“She has treated every worker with respect and dignity, reminding us that politics is ultimately about connecting with people and understanding their aspirations. Her guidance and encouragement have always been deeply valued,” he said.

‘PROFOUNDLY GRATEFUL’
Summing up his message, Shivakumar said the Gandhi family represented different dimensions of leadership, including recognising talent, supporting people during adversity, listening with empathy and inspiring others through conviction and service.
“As someone who began as a grassroots worker and has been entrusted today with the responsibility of leading Karnataka, I remain profoundly grateful for their trust and encouragement,” he said.
He also reiterated that he would continue to work towards building a progressive and inclusive Karnataka aligned with the values he said they collectively stood for.
