At least two people have been killed in violent unrest in Assam’s Kokrajhar district following the brutal killing of a youth, triggering widespread protests, arson and severe disruption to daily life.
The situation remains tense, with authorities deploying heavy security forces and suspending mobile internet services to prevent further escalation.
The victims have been identified as Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit and Sunil Murmu. Bismit was allegedly beaten to death during a clash between two groups, while Murmu later succumbed to injuries sustained during the protests that followed the killing.
Public anger spilled onto the Karigaon stretch of National Highway, where protesters blocked roads, bringing vehicular movement to a halt. As tensions mounted, mobs allegedly torched two temporary camps of the Birsa Commando Force and vandalised properties, including the Sidu Kanhu Bhawan. Several shops were also set on fire, raising fears of further violence.
