Iran on Wednesday mocked US President Donald Trump over his claim that a “new regime” in Tehran had sought a ceasefire, dismissing the remarks as an “April Fools’ joke” and calling his assertions “false
and baseless”.
The sharp response came after Trump said Iran had reached out to the United States for a ceasefire and suggested that Tehran’s “new regime president” was “less radical” than his predecessors. He also said Washington would consider any deal only after the Strait of Hormuz was reopened.
Iran’s Mumbai consulate joins in
In a pointed social media post on Wednesday, Iran’s Consulate General in Mumbai ridiculed Trump’s description of a “new” Iranian president, noting that President Masoud Pezeshkian has already been in office and was not newly installed.
“On April Fools’ Day, it’s almost poetic that Donald Trump still manages to outdo the jokes,” the consulate said, adding that “presidents aren’t replaced by tweets… that’s what elections are for.”

The swipe was aimed directly at Trump’s claim that Iran was now being led by a different, more pragmatic leadership — a framing Tehran has clearly rejected.
Tehran rejects ceasefire claim
Iran also firmly denied Trump’s assertion that it had asked Washington for a ceasefire.
According to Iranian officials quoted by state media, the claim was “false and baseless”, with Tehran pushing back against what it sees as an attempt by the White House to shape the narrative around the conflict.
The denial underscores the continuing information war running alongside the military confrontation, with both sides trying to frame who is under pressure and who is dictating terms.
Trump’s claim and conditions
Trump had earlier claimed on social media that Iran’s leadership had reached out for a truce, but made clear that any easing of hostilities would depend on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the key global oil chokepoint that has become central to the conflict.
His comments appeared to suggest that Washington sees maritime access and energy flows as a major condition for any de-escalation, even as fighting and missile exchanges continue across the region.
