Diet Coke Shortage: India is facing an unexpected consumer crisis this summer- a shortage of Diet Coke that has left fans across major cities scrambling for the familiar silver can. Availability issues
have been reported since mid-April in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Gurugram, with the zero-sugar beverage disappearing from quick commerce platforms, retail stores and some restaurants.
Apps including Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart have shown the drink as unavailable in multiple neighbourhoods, frustrating loyal buyers who rely on instant delivery for their caffeine fix.

What Is Causing Diet Coke Shortage?
A mix of global and local disruptions are behind the shortage. These include rising aluminium supply pressures, shipping and logistics bottlenecks and packaging-related adjustments under Indian compliance rules. With summer demand rising, even short-term supply disruptions can quickly empty shelves in major cities.
The shortage has become a full-blown online trend, especially among Gen Z users, who are posting memes, jokes and dramatic reactions about life without Diet Coke. Many office workers joked that productivity had collapsed without a chilled can nearby. Others called the drink “emotional support in a can,” turning it into a symbol of work culture survival.

One user posted, “Yeah, that’s true. I have been asking for a Diet Coke in local stores, but they say there is no supply these days. By the way, does this actually have zero sugar?”
Another wrote, “It’s interesting to see how global factors like the surge in aluminium prices and shipping constraints in West Asia trickle down to our local grocery apps. It’s not just a soda shortage; it’s a masterclass in how fragile global logistics can be.”
A third user took a harder line, saying, “Good, India has to ban all the sugary sodas for people less than 18.”
