Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker are all set to reunite for a movie on the life of legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath. This collaboration comes 25 years after the success of their film Lagaan. Now,
the latest update suggests that Farhan Akhtar is in talks to be a part of the project in a pivotal role.
As per Pinkvilla, Farhan Akhtar is in talks to join the project and play Lala Amarnath’s best friend in the film. A source close to the development shared with the portal, “Aamir Khan plays Lala Amarnath in the film, which is essentially a friendship story set against the backdrop of cricket and Partition. Farhan Akhtar is in talks for the role of his closest friend. The emotional dynamics between the two characters form the heart of the narrative.”
The source further revealed that the story is by Rajkumar Hirani. “The film is being produced by Aamir Khan along with Excel Entertainment and Rajkumar Hirani, and is expected to go on floors around October 2026 with a start-to-finish schedule,” the source further added.
About the Film
Unlike Lagaan, which blended fictional storytelling with colonial-era sports drama, the upcoming film is said to be rooted in history and set around the time of India’s Partition in 1947. Reports claim the story will explore Lala Amarnath’s life and journey while using cricket as the emotional backbone of the narrative.
Industry buzz also suggests the script has already gone through several reading sessions. Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi are reportedly believed to have offered creative inputs during the development process.
Aamir Khan’s Work Front
On the work front, Aamir Khan was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, which also starred Genelia D’Souza. The actor is now gearing up for the sequel to 3 Idiots. The film will be a follow-up to his 2009 superhit movie. According to an industry source, Aamir Khan has officially started working on the sequel. The project is presently in its pre-production phase, and it has been confirmed that the original trio, Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi, are set to reprise their roles in the much-awaited follow-up.
