The nephew of a Congress Rajya Sabha MP allegedly shot his wife before turning the gun on himself inside their Ahmedabad apartment, police said on Thursday, adding that the couple had been married for barely
two months.
The man has been identified as Yashrajsinh Gohil, nephew of former Gujarat Congress president and Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil. His wife, Rajeshwari Gohil, died after being shot with a licensed firearm late Wednesday night.
Police said the incident followed a dispute between the couple at their residence. During the altercation, Yashrajsinh allegedly fired at his wife using his revolver.
He later alerted emergency services, and she was rushed for medical attention, but doctors declared her brought dead.
After the emergency responders left the apartment, Yashrajsinh is said to have moved to another room, where he shot himself with the same weapon. He died on the spot, officials said.
Yashrajsinh was serving as a Class-I officer with the Gujarat Maritime Board and had recently cleared competitive examinations.
Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said the family was devastated by the tragedy and struggling to come to terms with the loss.
Describing the incident as deeply distressing, Doshi said Yashrajsinh had appeared cheerful and focused on his career, and the couple was planning a vacation abroad.
He suggested the possibility of an accidental discharge, stating that Yashrajsinh was familiar with firearms, though police have not confirmed this claim.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Investigators are examining the firearm licence, emergency call logs and other evidence, and are recording statements from family members to reconstruct the sequence of events.
