Nearly four years after his social media posts with Sushmita Sen broke the internet, businessman and former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has finally spoken in detail about their relationship, confirming that
they were together and explaining why the romance ultimately came to an end. In a recent conversation with Humans of Bombay, Lalit Modi described Sushmita as one of the most important people in his life and revealed that distance played a major role in their breakup.
According to the London-based businessman, there was no dramatic fallout between the two. Instead, their lives gradually moved in different directions, with Sushmita based in India and him living in London.
Looking back at their relationship, he said, “Sushmita was very special to me, she made me grow into a lot of things that I am today, and was extremely special. She was very much part of my life at that time, and would have been. It was just the distances were too much for us. Her career was India, my life was in London. But it was a very, very special relationship, and I have the fondest memories of her. And she’s still a very, very dear friend of mine. And I just wish her all the best. She’s an amazing lady and what she has done for two girls, Rene and Alisah — it’s amazing. She is a very special lady.”
He went on to add, “Her parents are very special, and she as a single mother, has done a tremendous job in her life. And I sit in amazement and look at her, how she grows and grows and grows. And I just wish her all the best.”
The relationship first became public in July 2022 when Lalit Modi shared a series of photographs with Sushmita from their holidays together. The photos went viral and trended on Google for days, with social media users speculating about their relationship and debating the ‘unexpected’ pairing.

Lalit Modi also revealed that Sushmita Sen knew he was sharing the photos on social media and had no issue with it. According to him, she never asked him to delete the pictures after they were posted. “I did it right there in front of her. She didn’t think I’d do it. We were arguing about something on the plane. I said, ‘you know, I’m going to post this’. She was like, ‘ha, ha, ha’. And I pressed the button. We were in Sardinia, and she was going back to London to see her mother. And I was flying to drop her back. By the time we landed, all had broken loose. But that was all right. There was nothing wrong with it. She didn’t say anything of it. Didn’t say ‘take it down’.”
