For weeks, speculation around the next instalment of Rohit Shetty’s popular comedy franchise had been gaining momentum. Industry chatter suggested that Golmaal 5 might draw inspiration from the 1980 cult
entertainer Do Aur Do Paanch, starring Amitabh Bachchan and the late Shashi Kapoor. The rumours spread quickly across, sparking curiosity among fans of both the classic film and Shetty’s blockbuster series.
Earlier this month, Rohit Shetty firmly dismissed the reports. The conversation around Do Aur Do Paanch has refused to die down. Interestingly, while Shetty’s camp has denied any connection, a separate development indicates that the 1980 film could indeed return to the big screen, though under a different banner.
Abhishek Bachchan And Bobby Deol As Leads?
Producer Deepak Mukut, who owns the rights to Do Aur Do Paanch, has confirmed that a new project linked to the film is currently in the scripting stage. Speaking about his long-standing plans, Mukut told Mid-Day, “A decade ago, I was planning a remake with Kunal Kohli as the director, and Abhishek (Bachchan) and Bobby Deol playing Bachchanji and Shashi Kapoor’s roles (respectively). At that time, it could not materialise.”
The project may not have taken off then, but Mukut has not given up. He is now revisiting the idea with fresh intent. “I haven’t decided whether the movie will be inspired by, a remake, or a sequel to Do Aur Do Paanch. Ideally, I’d like to cast Abhishek and Bobby again as they look great together on screen,” he shared, hinting at a possible reunion that could excite audiences.
As rumours linking Golmaal 5 to the classic film intensified, Mukut took swift action to protect his rights. He recalled, “I put the notice in a trade magazine, so that no one else can remake or be inspired by it. I own Do Aur Do Paanch’s rights.”
Rohit Shetty Shuts Down Golmaal 5 Linkups
Meanwhile, Rohit Shetty Picturez issued a detailed clarification earlier this month, strongly denying any creative overlap. The statement read, “We wish to issue a strict clarification regarding certain news reports currently circulating across online and digital media platforms claiming that Golmaal 5 is inspired by or based on the film Do Aur Do Paanch. We categorically state that these reports are factually incorrect, misleading and completely untrue. We strongly request all media houses, publications, portals and digital platforms to refrain from publishing or circulating unverified information.”
The statement further added, “Any news, update or clarification pertaining to Rohit Shetty or Golmaal 5 must be verified with us or our official PR representatives — Universal Communications — prior to publication, failing which strict legal action will be taken. We expect your cooperation in maintaining journalistic accuracy and responsibility. We also request that incorrect reports currently in circulation be corrected or taken down at the earliest.”
With both camps making their positions clear, it now appears that while Golmaal 5 and Do Aur Do Paanch are unrelated, audiences may still witness a revival of the iconic 1980 entertainer in a new avatar.
