As India experiences an unusual rise in temperatures during a heatwave, most of us focus on staying hydrated and avoiding heatstroke. What many don’t realise is that your eyes also need protection. Excessive
dust, heat, and bright sunlight can irritate the eyes and even damage vision if not properly managed.
Dr Yogesh Chougule, Consultant Cataract, Cornea & Refractive Surgeon, NIO Super Speciality Hospital, Pune, shares six easy ways to protect your eyes from the summer sun:
1. Wear Sunglasses Outdoors
When stepping out in the sun, make sure to wear sunglasses. Choose high-quality pairs that block harmful UV rays. This helps protect your eyes from damage, dryness, and irritation caused by harsh sunlight.
2. Avoid Direct Exposure to Dust and Hot Air
Avoid going out during peak afternoon hours when heat and UV exposure are at their highest. If you do step out, wear protective glasses or a hat. Also, limit exposure to hot winds, as they can dry and irritate the eyes. Even continuous exposure to air from fans or air conditioners can cause dryness, so avoid sitting directly in front of them for long periods.
3. Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes
Dust and sweat can irritate your eyes, but rubbing them can worsen the problem and even lead to infection. Instead, rinse your eyes gently with clean water if irritation occurs.
4. Use Lubricating Eye Drops
Artificial tears can help soothe dryness and irritation, especially if you spend long hours in air-conditioned environments or outdoors in hot, dry conditions.
5. Stay Hydrated
It is important to stay well-hydrated, as adequate fluid intake supports tear production, which protects the eyes. Limit alcohol and caffeinated beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration.
6. Limit Screen Time
Prolonged screen time can strain your eyes, especially when they are already dry due to heat. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Following these simple steps can help maintain long-term eye health. Regular eye check-ups are essential for the early detection and management of any eye condition. Consult an ophthalmologist if you experience symptoms such as persistent redness, pain, or blurred vision. Do not ignore these signs, stay cool, stay safe, and protect your vision this summer.
