The way Indians travel is undergoing a noticeable shift, with sustainability emerging as a defining factor in travel decisions. According to Agoda’s 2026 Sustainable Travel Survey, 88% of Indian travellers
consider sustainability important when choosing travel options, placing India third in Asia. This reflects a broader regional trend where travel is no longer just about destinations, but also about impact.
Looking ahead, this shift appears long-term rather than temporary. Around 90% of Indian respondents say sustainable travel will matter to them over the next three years, signalling a deeper change in mindset. Travellers are increasingly aligning their choices with values that go beyond convenience and cost.
Supporting Local Communities
One of the strongest drivers behind this shift is the desire to support local communities. Nearly 39% of Indian travellers say the most important outcome of sustainable travel is ensuring their spending benefits local economies. This is followed by preserving natural landscapes and wildlife (33%) and building a deeper connection with destinations (16%), highlighting a move towards more meaningful and responsible travel experiences.
This evolving mindset is also reflected in the type of experiences travellers are seeking. Tours that protect the environment and support communities rank highest at 35%, followed by programs that allow travellers to give back (31%). There is also growing interest in transportation with lower environmental impact and accommodations with sustainability certifications, pointing to a demand for end-to-end responsible travel options.
Beyond environmental concerns, Indian travellers see tourism as a key driver of economic growth. Over half (53%) believe responsibly managed tourism benefits local businesses, while 16% highlight its role in preserving culture and traditions. This indicates that sustainability is increasingly being viewed through a broader lens that includes economic and cultural impact.
As platforms like Agoda introduce initiatives such as Eco Deals, which support conservation efforts through travel bookings, sustainable travel is becoming easier to adopt. The shift suggests that in 2026 and beyond, travel will not just be about where people go, but how their journeys contribute to the world around them.
