The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its crackdown on food establishments across the state, suspending licences and seizing unsafe food products over serious violations of
hygiene and food-safety norms.
FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said authorities would take strict action against establishments found compromising public health. “The government is extremely strict regarding food quality and enforcement of the law in Maharashtra. Playing with the health of consumers and the public will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
In Mumbai, the FDA suspended the licence of Delhi Sweet & Bhelpuri House in Malad West after a surprise inspection uncovered several violations. Officials found food stored near an open drain, damaged kitchen infrastructure, unsafe water being used for cooking, and unlabelled paneer and lassi. The outlet was also allegedly manufacturing and repacking several products without the required authorisation. Several food handlers lacked mandatory medical certificates, while required food and water testing records were not produced.
The food registration certificate of Gulzar Mohammadi Hotel in Kurla West was also suspended after an inspection on August 27. The establishment scored just 24 out of 88 in the FDA assessment. Officials reported cockroach infestation, spoiled vegetables, poor drainage, exposed cooked food, inadequate worker hygiene and the absence of mandatory medical and food-safety training records.
In Sangli, officials seized and destroyed 151 litres of raw milk worth Rs 6,448 at Mayakka Milk Collection Centre in Erandoli on August 31. The milk had allegedly been left uncovered at room temperature for over four hours. Authorities also found no proper milk collection records and alleged that the operator had broken an FDA seal placed on a cream separator.
The FDA said such action was necessary because the violations posed potential risks to consumer health. The affected establishments have been ordered to halt food production, storage, sale and distribution until deficiencies are rectified and compliance requirements are met.
