An experienced paraglider pilot was killed after a tandem paraglider reportedly developed a technical malfunction shortly after take-off and crashed near a road below the launch site at Bir Billing in Kangra
district, officials said on Saturday.
The accident occurred on Friday evening when the tandem paraglider took off from the Billing launch point. According to the Bir Billing Paragliding Association, the glider lost balance mid-air moments after take-off before crashing to the ground.
The pilot, identified as Mohan Singh, a resident of Barot in Mandi district, sustained critical injuries in the crash and died while being rushed to the hospital. The tourist flying with him was also injured but is reported to be out of danger after receiving first aid.
Residents and rescue teams quickly reached the spot and shifted both victims to a nearby hospital. Following the incident, authorities and paragliding operators suspended all paragliding activities at Bir Billing for a day as a mark of respect.
A case has been registered, and an investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the crash. Officials said they are examining whether the accident was triggered by a technical fault, human error, or weather-related factors.
The incident has renewed concerns over safety standards at adventure sports destinations, particularly the need for regular equipment inspections, strict pilot certification norms, and adherence to safety protocols.
District Tourism Development Officer, Kangra, Vinay Kumar, said all documents and relevant information related to the incident have been sought from site marshals and technical advisors.
“Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation report,” he said.
