Swiss Air Flight Engine Failure: A major tragedy was averted at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) after a Zurich-bound Swiss Air flight aborted take-off, reportedly due to engine failure
on Sunday.
The incident took place on Swiss Air flight LX147 (New Delhi-Zurich), an Airbus A330, when one of the aircraft’s engines failed and caught fire during the takeoff roll. Smoke was reported on the left side of the aircraft and a fire near the right landing gear, prompting the crew to stop the aircraft and initiate an emergency evacuation.
Passengers on board reported tense moments as smoke was seen coming from the aircraft, leading to panic inside.
There were 228 passengers, four infants, and crew members on board at the time of the incident. All occupants were safely evacuated using emergency slides, while stairs were arranged for a few individuals unable to use the slides. However, six passengers sustained injuries during the evacuation and are currently undergoing treatment.
Runway 28 at Delhi Airport was temporarily blocked for a prolonged period following the incident, causing significant disruption to operations at one of India’s busiest aviation hubs.
Delhi Airport issued a statement saying that a full emergency was declared at the airport involving Swiss International Airlines flight LX 147 (DEL-ZRH) on Runway 28/10.
“All prescribed safety protocols were promptly executed, and passengers were safely evacuated. Airport operations remained unaffected,” it said.
