Bengaluru News Update: Food safety officials in Bengaluru have widened their ongoing crackdown on unhygienic kitchens, inspecting government-run Indira Canteens in Bommanahalli and Lingarajpuram on Tuesday
and issuing notices over alleged violations.
The inspections were conducted as part of a continuing drive by the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department to check compliance with food safety regulations across Bengaluru.
The latest checks at Indira Canteens come days after food safety officials inspected several high-end hotels and restaurants across the city, where they reported a series of violations, including expired food, poor storage, and unhygienic food-handling practices.
Rotten Chicken, Beef And Expired Dairy Found
According to a report in The Times of India, during inspections conducted on Sunday, officials seized and disposed of 132 kg of food items, including rotten chicken and beef. Some of the seized meat was reportedly found to have fungal growth, raising concerns over the conditions in which food was being stored and handled.
Officials also found expired milk and curd packets at an upscale rooftop lounge in UB City.
The kitchen of the lounge was subsequently closed after officials found it was being maintained in an unhygienic condition.
60 Three-Star, Five-Star Hotels Inspected
The department said it inspected 60 three-star and five-star hotels across Bengaluru Urban district during a three-day special food safety drive.
As part of the inspections, officials collected 77 food samples and sent them for laboratory analysis.
The checks were aimed at determining whether establishments were complying with food safety requirements and maintaining proper standards for food storage, preparation and handling.
What Did Food Safety Officials Find?
Officials reported several types of alleged violations during the inspections.
These included:
- Expired food products being found at establishments
- Improper storage of meat and fish
- Unhygienic food-handling conditions
- Fungal growth on vegetables
- Inadequate segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food
- Improper maintenance of kitchen areas
- Food products being stored in conditions that did not meet required hygiene standards
The department said notices had been issued to establishments where violations were detected.
Legal Action Recommended
The food safety department said further legal action had been recommended against establishments where violations were found. The laboratory analysis of the 77 food samples collected during the special drive will also help determine whether additional action is required.
The inspections are part of a broader enforcement campaign being carried out across Bengaluru to ensure food businesses comply with food safety regulations.
