Around 2,400 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) are set to be deployed across West Bengal for the upcoming Assembly elections. Of these, nearly 480 companies had already been deployed by
March 10, with personnel conducting flag marches in several sensitive areas to install confidence among voters.
The remaining 1,920 companies will be deployed in a phased manner on March 31, and April 7, 10, 13, and 17. According to sources, special trains are being arranged to facilitate the smooth movement of these forces into the state.
In a significant move towards transparency, the Election Commission of India (EC) has begun sharing photographs of CAPF deployments on its official social media platforms. A closer look at these images reveals that each photograph includes precise details such as latitude, longitude, and the exact location where the respective battalion is stationed.
Sources within the EC told News18 that allegations regarding the movement and conduct of CAPF personnel are frequently raised during election periods. In previous years, there have even been claims that forces were not present at locations where incidents of violence occurred. To address such allegations and enhance accountability, the Commission has decided to geo-tag the movement of CAPF units.
Additionally, the Chief Electoral Office (CEO) of West Bengal has constituted a joint committee to oversee the deployment of forces based on detailed assessments of vulnerability and sensitivity across polling areas. The committee is tasked with determining the precise requirement of personnel in each Assembly constituency.
Sources further revealed that the EC has gone beyond geo-tagging. GPS trackers have been installed in all vehicles transporting CAPF personnel. Moreover, special cameras have been deployed in Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and other moving units. These cameras are designed to record real-time incidents, ensuring that any untoward situation is documented comprehensively.
According to insiders, the primary objective of these measures is to effectively respond to allegations and counter-allegations regarding the conduct and presence of security forces. Political experts believe this is a significant and forward-looking step toward ensuring greater transparency in election management.
Ensuring free and intimidation-free elections remains a major challenge for the Election Commission. However, sources indicate that officials are working round the clock to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
