Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing state visit to Indonesia is expected to deliver five major strategic outcomes spanning defence, critical minerals, election technology and maritime cooperation, according
to sources. The expected developments come as the two countries seek to further deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The anticipated announcements coincide with PM Modi’s bilateral talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on Tuesday.
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri accompanied the Prime Minister during the meeting, which is expected to provide fresh momentum to cooperation across multiple sectors.
PM Modi arrived in Indonesia on the first leg of his three-nation tour covering Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.
He was accorded a grand ceremonial welcome, with Indonesian Air Force fighter jets escorting his aircraft as it entered the country’s airspace before President Prabowo personally received him at the airport.
THE FIVE KEY OUTCOMES EXPECTED
1. Indonesia To Import India’s Astra Missiles
According to sources, Indonesia has decided to import India’s indigenous Astra air-to-air missiles following the demonstrated success of India’s air-to-air missile capabilities during Operation Sindoor. The expected move is set to significantly strengthen defence cooperation between the two countries.
2. India To Support Development Of Indonesia-Specific EVMs
Sources said India will support the development of Indonesia-specific Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), marking what is being seen as a major endorsement of India’s election management model and institutional expertise.
3. India To Invest In Critical Minerals Manufacturing
According to sources, India will invest in the manufacturing of steel, nickel and rare earth permanent magnets in Indonesia to strengthen critical mineral supply chains.
News agency ANI reported that critical minerals are expected to figure prominently in the bilateral discussions, as Indonesia holds around 21 per cent of the world’s nickel reserves and is also among the leading producers of bauxite, copper and tin. The cooperation is expected to support India’s long-term supply chain security and clean energy ambitions.
4. Indonesia To Expand BrahMos Inventory
Sources said Indonesia is expected to expand its inventory of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, with India set to support Jakarta by supplying additional BrahMos batteries.
Defence cooperation has emerged as a key pillar of bilateral ties, with security relations expanding through high-level exchanges, joint military exercises, defence industry collaboration and Indonesia’s acquisition of BrahMos missiles.
5. India, Indonesia To Jointly Develop Sabang Port
According to sources, India and Indonesia will jointly develop the strategically located Sabang Port, which overlooks the Strait of Malacca and is around 100 miles from India’s Great Nicobar Port project.
The project is expected to strengthen maritime connectivity and strategic coordination in the Indo-Pacific.
Maritime cooperation remains one of the priority areas under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, supported by India’s MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions) vision.
FIRST BILATERAL VISIT SINCE 2018 STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
This is PM Modi’s first bilateral visit to Indonesia since the two countries elevated ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.
Ahead of his departure, the Prime Minister said he and President Prabowo would hold discussions aimed at providing greater momentum to the partnership across various sectors.
PM Modi also said the visit would further strengthen India’s Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision and its commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
During his stay, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to visit the UNESCO-listed Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta with President Prabowo and interact with members of the Indian diaspora.
Indonesia is India’s second-largest trading partner within ASEAN, with bilateral trade reaching USD 24.78 billion during FY 2025-26.
Following the conclusion of his engagements in Indonesia, PM Modi will travel to Australia and New Zealand as part of his three-nation diplomatic tour.
