“Ye toh mere papa ki pehli car thi.” And in most cases, that car was none other than the Hindustan Ambassador. This iconic vehicle ruled Indian roads for decades, long before sleek sedans and compact SUVs
became the norm. A favourite among Indian households, Ambassador continues to holda special place in people’s memories.
And now, the iconic car has resurfaced in a place where no one expected to see it: Italy. Yes, you read that right. Recently, a video has surfaced online that is catching widespread attention online. It shows a well-maintained Hindustan Ambassador parked on a roadside in Milan, Italy.
Ambassador From Gujarat Spotted In Italy
On a closer look, the clip reveals a surprising detail: the number plate. Instead of an Italian registration, the Ambassador carries an Indian one.
The number plate bears the RTO code GJ01 which confirms that the car is registered in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The overlay text on the video reads, “Spotted a GJ01 Ahmedabad-registered Ambassador in Milan, Italy.”
The caption accompanying the clip asks, “How did this Indian icon end up in the fashion capital!!”

Internet Reacts With Nostalgia
Since being shared online, the clip gained significant traction as it accumulated more than six million views. In the comment section, people shared their varied thoughts to an unexpected sight.
One user commented, “Grew up with an HM Ambassador. Not in the garage anymore, but forever in my heart.”
Another said, “Holy shit, it’s a Mark III! They’re the rarest and the classiest of all the Marks. Not a fan of the non-original hub caps though. Over-all, beautiful!” “
“GJ plates, Italian roads — desi roots, global routes,” someone remarked while a person said, “Gujarat ki gaadi har jagah dikh jati hai (A car from Gujarat can be spotted anywhere).”
An individual shared, “This was my dad’s first car. He bought it the day I was born.”
“It’s a flex,” “The aura this has, like damn” and “Unforgettable legacy” were some other remarks.
Why The Ambassador Still Holds A Special Place
Manufactured by Hindustan Motors from 1957 to 2014, the Ambassador was based on the British Morris Oxford Series III. Often called the “King of Indian Roads,” it dominated the Indian automobile market for decades due to limited competition and government policies. It became a symbol of power and status, widely used by politicians, bureaucrats and officials across the country.
