Lucknow, Aug 12 (PTI) Monsoon activity is expected to intensify across Uttar Pradesh from August 13, with widespread rainfall and isolated spells of heavy rain likely in the state till August 18, according
to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The fresh spell of monsoon rainfall is expected to begin over eastern Uttar Pradesh on August 13 and gradually spread to central and adjoining western parts of the state on August 14.
The weather department said a low-pressure area over northwestern Madhya Pradesh and another system over the northern Bay of Bengal are influencing the monsoon trough.
The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to strengthen into a well-marked low-pressure area within the next 12 hours and further intensify into a depression during the following 24 hours before moving northwestwards and crossing the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast.
The monsoon trough is expected to shift northwards from its present position, strengthening monsoon flow over Uttar Pradesh and triggering another widespread spell of rainfall.
The IMD’s forecast issued on Wednesday said that rain or thundershowers were very likely at isolated places over western Uttar Pradesh and at a few places over eastern Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. Heavy rain is very likely at isolated places over eastern Uttar Pradesh, while thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also possible at isolated places across the state.
For Lucknow, the forecast indicated mainly clear skies becoming partly cloudy, with light rain likely towards evening or night on August 13. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain around 35 and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Lucknow recorded a maximum temperature of 36.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, 3.4 degrees above normal, while the minimum was 27.4 degrees Celsius, 1.6 degrees above normal. No rainfall was recorded in the city between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm.
Several parts of the state experienced above-normal temperatures on Wednesday.
Lakhimpur Kheri recorded a maximum of 37.6 degrees Celsius, 4.5 degrees above normal, while Gorakhpur and Bahraich recorded 37.8 degrees Celsius each. Fatehgarh recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius, 4.2 degrees above normal.
The IMD’s data also showed 22.4 mm of rain in Agra and 12.4 mm in Ballia during the reported period.
The renewed rainfall activity is likely to provide relief from the prevailing heat in several parts of the state, while the possibility of heavy rain and lightning warrants caution, particularly in eastern districts. PTI CDN MPL MPL
