The rugged, teak-filled forests of Gir National Park have long been the only place on Earth to witness the Asiatic lion in its natural habitat. But lately, the Sasan Gir sanctuary has also become a “den”
for Bollywood’s elite. Very recently, Ayushmann Khurrana, Rakul Preet Singh and Wamiqa Gabbi also visited this corner of Gujarat to promote their movie Pati Patni Aur Woh Do. The trio was seen enjoying a safari inside the national park, where they also spotted lions. If you’re in the mood for some lion sighting, here’s all you need to know.
History of Gir National Park
Once roaming freely across vast swathes of Asia, the number of Asiatic Lions in India started dwindling alarmingly in the 19th century due to rampant hunting. Indian princely states, often at the behest of British colonial officials, organised lavish hunting expeditions that decimated wildlife populations. By the century’s end, the Asiatic lion was teetering on the brink of extinction, with a mere handful surviving within the confines of the Gir Forest, a private hunting ground of the Nawab of Junagarh, Sir Muhammad Mahabat Khanji III. He took it upon himself to protect the lions, and dedicated large tracts of forests in Gir towards this cause. The establishment of the Gir Forest National Park in 1965 was the next crucial step in safeguarding this magnificent predator.
Zones, Safari Permits At Gir National Park
To experience the magic of Gir, visitors can embark on thrilling jeep safaris inside the park. Unlike other national parks, Gir does not have zones; it has 13 routes, which are randomly assigned to the jeeps.
Devalia Interpretation Zone: If you don’t want to take chances, Gir has a section called Devalia Safari Park, a fenced-off part of the sanctuary where bus safaris guarantee a glimpse into this wild haven. Here, you and your kids can explore the park’s diverse landscapes, from dry deciduous forests to grasslands, and get a chance to spot leopards, antelopes, and a plethora of bird species.
You can purchase the permit from the official Gujarat government website, but it should ideally be booked at least 60 to 90 days in advance. One e-permit costs around INR 1000, and is valid for 6 people in a jeep.
The permit doesn’t include the Guide and Safari vehicle charge, which must be paid separately to respective Guides and Safari vehicle owners. Guide Charges are Rs. 400 and Safari Vehicle Charges are different for different vehicles: Type A: 3500/- (6 seater new safari vehicle); 4500/- (8 seater new comfortable safari vehicle); Type B: 2000/- (6 seater old safari vehicle).
Best Time To Visit
The ideal time to visit Gir National Park is between October and April when the weather is pleasant, and wildlife is more active.
