A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Tremors from the earthquake were also felt in Venezuela.
The earthquake struck at
7:34 am Colombia time, with the epicentre located about three miles east of San José del Palmar, Colombia, according to data from the USGS.
The 7.4-magnitude temblor was recorded near San José del Palmar, according to the agency’s initial data.
The USGS said seismologists are reviewing the available information following the earthquake. The reported magnitude could be revised as more data is analysed.
The agency also said additional information collected about the earthquake could lead its scientists to update the shake-severity map.

Tremors Felt In Venezuela
Tremors from Monday’s earthquake were felt in Venezuela, according to the information available from the USGS.
The latest earthquake comes months after Venezuela was hit by two powerful earthquakes on June 24, 2026.
The first earthquake in Venezuela measured 7.2 magnitude. It was followed about 39 seconds later by a 7.5-magnitude mainshock near the country’s northern coast, west of Caracas.

The USGS described the second Venezuelan earthquake as a shallow strike-slip event.
The quake occurred near the boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates.
The two earthquakes struck Venezuela months before Monday’s powerful earthquake in Colombia, which was recorded at 7.4 magnitude.
