The holiday season is something people across the globe look forward to – the streets shining brighter than the stars, homes decked up in the season’s colours, and, of course, the unmatched joy of unwrapping
presents. Yet, in the midst of all the excitement, the environmental impact of our celebrations often takes a backseat.
As Nikita Bansal, Founder of Yaahvi, puts it, “Every home already holds its own festive decor. It’s less about buying new and more about seeing familiar objects with fresh eyes.” With this mindful approach in mind, here are simple swaps you can make this holiday season to ensure that both the planet and your celebrations stay merry.
1. Rethink Your Ornaments
Instead of reaching for plastic baubles, consider ornaments made from repurposed fabrics. Crafted using leftover textiles or upcycled materials, these soft, tactile decorations are not only planet-friendly but also add that touch of warmth, which store-bought decorations simply lack. In case making your ornaments isn’t something feasible, brands such as The Burlap People have created a range of handmade Christmas tree ornaments, including Christmas trees, embroidered stars, hearts, and bells – using materials that would otherwise go to waste.
2. Turn Everyday Objects Into Holiday Magic
Sometimes the most beautiful Christmas decor is just hiding in plain sight, right in our homes. As Saina and Kanika Takkar, Co-Founders of Ardhi Looms, point out, glass jars can be transformed into candle holders, old brass or steel bowls can hold pine cones or dried orange slices, and leftover fabric works beautifully as bows or table runners. Even books stacked thoughtfully can create simple festive vignettes, while scarves, shawls, or rugs layered around the home make for an intimate yet festive setting.
3. Wrap With Intention
Nothing beats the feeling of opening presents on a crisp winter morning, but small choices like swapping blingy, single-use gift wrapping paper for conscious alternatives like jute sacks, cloth wraps, or fabric gift bags matter more than we realise. Not only do they reduce waste, but they also add a rustic, handcrafted charm to your presents. Finish them with twine, dried flowers, or a simple handwritten tag to make these wraps feel thoughtful, reusable, and just as festive, but without the excess.
These changes may feel small at first, but their impact lasts beyond the festive season, ensuring that your celebrations are a happy time for both you and the planet!
