Delhi is seeing a sharp surge in H1N1 influenza cases this season, with infections climbing to 1,344 from just 229 during the same period last year- an increase of nearly six times. The spike raised concern
among doctors, who are warning people not to dismiss H1N1 as a routine bout of seasonal flu. While most healthy people recover, influenza can become serious and potentially life-threatening in vulnerable patients.
Why Is H1N1 Concerning This Season?
The scale of the increase is significant as Delhi recorded 1,344 H1N1 cases this season, compared with 229 in the corresponding period last year. For most otherwise healthy people, influenza may cause fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and fatigue before gradually improving but the same infection can take a much more serious course among people who are already vulnerable.
Older adults, pregnant women, young children, diabetics and people with chronic heart or lung diseases face a higher risk of complications. Those with weakened immune systems are also particularly vulnerable.
Why Antibiotics Won’t Treat H1N1?
H1N1 is caused by a virus, which means antibiotics cannot treat the infection. Unnecessary antibiotic use can also contribute to antimicrobial resistance, making bacterial infections harder to treat in the future. Depending on the patient’s condition and risk factors, doctors may consider antiviral medicines, particularly in severe cases or among people at higher risk of complications.
Can H1N1 Be Prevented?
Vaccination remains one of the key ways to reduce the risk of severe influenza. Annual flu vaccination may not completely prevent infection but it can lower the chances of serious illness, complications and hospitalisation.
Other basic precautions include washing hands regularly, covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, avoiding close contact with others when sick and staying home when unwell can help reduce transmission.
With Delhi recording nearly six times as many H1N1 cases as it did during the same period last year, the rise is a reminder that influenza should not be treated casually. For most people, the illness may pass without major complications but for those at higher risk, recognising symptoms early and seeking timely medical care could make the difference between a routine infection and a serious illness.
