Malayalam superstar Mammootty has spoken publicly for the first time about the health scare that forced him to take a break from acting in 2025, revealing he temporarily lost his sense of smell and taste.
Appearing in a video shared by The Cue Studio during an event at a hospital, the actor reflected on how the experience reshaped his perspective on everyday sensory abilities.
“Eyesight and hearing are very important aspects of human life. Even while breathing, some people are unable to smell anything. I was unable to smell or taste anything for a long time. Now, I am slowly regaining it. We only understand the value of such abilities when we lose them,” Mammootty said.
He went on to speak about the privilege of sensory perception, noting how many people overlook its significance. “When we ask someone to lower the volume or speak in a softer voice, it is because we can hear. People who cannot hear would never say such things. Some people don’t even realize the privilege they have in being able to like or dislike a song, while others simply wish to hear something in their lives. Hearing is a godly blessing.”
The actor had stepped away from films for several months after undergoing treatment following the health scare. While official details were never confirmed, reports at the time suggested he had undergone cancer treatment. He later returned to work after receiving a positive medical update.
Return to Films and Upcoming Projects
Mammootty announced his comeback by rejoining the shoot of Patriot, directed by Mahesh Narayanan. The spy action drama reportedly centres on a controversial intelligence mission and reunites him with fellow Malayalam cinema icon Mohanlal after nearly a decade. The ensemble cast also includes Kunchacko Boban, Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara, Rajiv Menon and Revathi, with the film scheduled for release on April 23, 2026.
Beyond Patriot, the veteran actor remains busy with multiple commitments. He is currently filming the drama Padayaatra and will also appear in a significant role in Dhanush’s D55, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy.
