Bengaluru is famous for being India’s tech hub. Despite the innovations and techniques, the city has not been able to crack waste management yet. Overflowing landfills and mountains of garbage have long
been a constant in the city, making it unbearable for many to survive. But now, an innovation born in the city itself might just change it all for everyone. Meet Chewie, an AI-powered robot that literally “eats” your wet waste.
The buzz started when Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw shared a video of the robot on social media. “Wow! Innovation for Bengaluru’s home-produced wet garbage,” she wrote, calling it a promising step towards cleaner homes. And since then, Chewie has gone viral, with many flooding social media with curiosity and praise.
What Is Chewie All About
Imagine never having to store rotting kitchen waste in bins again. This compact robot is designed to sit in your home kitchen, quietly digest all your food scraps, peels and leftovers. The AI-driven waste-processing unit breaks down wet waste and converts it into nutrient-rich soil within hours. The bonus? There is no smell, no mess and no more plastic bags filled with trash.

More Benefits Of Chewie
The benefits go beyond just cleaner kitchens. By turning waste into usable soil, this robot supports urban farming and gardening, providing a circular model that benefits both our homes and the environment, allowing everyone to live sustainably. In a city like Bengaluru, which has struggled for years with outdated waste systems, this new invention feels like a breath of fresh air.
Even social media users can’t resist sharing their excitement. “Wow. Brilliant! I think he should make these large machines and sell them to municipalities,” one person commented. He also suggested that local bodies should pay homeowners for waste they convert into organic manure. “Municipalities must pay house owners for depositing waste as this waste can be converted to organic manure,” he added.
Others, however, are curious about how AI is being used inside the machine. The person wrote, “What role does AI play here?” Someone else commented, “If it can’t sort waste then I don’t see the point of AI if only wet waste goes in there, it’s a glorified composter.”
Chewie’s viral moment shows just how powerful innovative solutions can be and looking at its advantages, it seems the day is not far when every kitchen in India would be turning trash into treasure.
