Retired Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel expressed openness to assuming a new role in the sport, provided it holds significance.
The German driver, who secured four titles with Red Bull and last
raced for Aston Martin in 2022, spoke to Reuters during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend, where he was promoting climate awareness.
“If it’s time well spent, involves a challenge, and includes the human component, which I genuinely enjoy, then why not?” he stated at Interlagos, refraining from detailing or providing specific examples.
“There must be a purpose. I don’t want to be here just for money or merely to be present. That’s not who I am, and it would feel wrong.
“Maybe it’s a new role… I don’t know. I’m not knocking on doors saying, ‘Look, can you employ me for this or that?'” added the 38-year-old.
Four-time Red Bull champion Max Verstappen mentioned in June that he would welcome Vettel back, amid discussions of Vettel possibly succeeding Red Bull’s long-time consultant and former racer Helmut Marko, who is now 82.
Vettel, the youngest-ever champion at 23 with Red Bull in 2010, has since turned his focus to environmental initiatives and attended Prince William’s Earthshot Prize ahead of the COP30 climate summit in Brazil.
He acknowledged the apparent conflict between addressing climate change and Formula One, which hosts 24 races globally, necessitating substantial air travel for all involved.
He suggested targeting solutions such as synthetic fuel, the sport’s 2030 net-zero carbon emissions goal, and sustainable travel practices.
“If Formula One can lead in this change, it not only secures its future existence but also demonstrates a clear purpose, showing others ‘come on, do the same’,” he said.
Vettel confirmed he had no regrets about ending his driving career.
“I was very privileged to choose when to stop. I made that decision, and I don’t regret it,” he said.
“But hopefully I’ll be around for a while, and there’s plenty of time to undertake different activities and continue learning.
