Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Meghalaya’s GI-tagged pineapples to UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during his recent visit to the West Asian nation, an official said on Thursday.
Grown
in the hilly terrains of Meghalaya, the pineapples are known for their rich aroma, high sugar content and low acidity, and are regarded among the finest fruit varieties from the Northeast.
The GI-tagged fruit is widely recognised for its flavour and quality, making it one of the most sought-after pineapples from the region.
“These GI-tagged pineapples are renowned for their exceptional sweetness and unique flavour profile. They represent the rich agricultural heritage and natural bounty of Meghalaya and made a perfect gift for the President,” an official said.
The fruit is also valued for its nutritional benefits as it contains high levels of bromelain, an enzyme known to aid digestion and reduce inflammation, besides being rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants.
“The presentation of Meghalaya’s pineapples on such a prestigious international platform is a matter of pride for the state and its farmers,” the official said.
The gesture also highlighted India’s efforts to promote indigenous and GI-tagged products from the Northeast through diplomatic and cultural engagements, the official added.
