As summer sets in, mangoes are flooding markets across India—but not all of them are as safe as they look. Many are being chemically ripened and sold under the label of “organic,” raising serious health
concerns. Authorities are now urging consumers to look beyond the tempting golden glow before making a purchase.
Flagging the issue on social media, Hyderabad city Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar warned that some traders, driven by profit, are resorting to unsafe practices. Instead of allowing mangoes to ripen naturally, they are using chemicals like Calcium Carbide—a hazardous substance known to pose significant health risks.
Buying mangoes just because they look bright, shiny, and perfect may actually mean bringing harmful chemicals into your home.
How To Identify Artificially Ripened Mangoes
Here are simple checks to spot chemically ripened fruit:
Colour matters: Naturally ripened mangoes don’t have a uniform colour. They show a mix of green, yellow, and sometimes red shades.
Too perfect? Be cautious: Artificially ripened mangoes often look uniformly bright yellow or golden.
Check inside: These mangoes may appear ripe outside, but remain raw or hard inside.
Smell test: A chemical or unusual odour is a red flag.
Skin clues: Watch for odd spots or patches on the peel.
Baking soda test: If the colour changes unusually after washing with baking soda water, it may indicate chemical treatment.
Taste warning: A strange or bitter taste is a clear sign to avoid consumption.
Health Risks You Shouldn’t Ignore
Medical experts warn that consuming chemically ripened mangoes can trigger immediate health issues such as throat irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In the long run, it may also lead to severe complications such as nervous system damage and respiratory problems.
