India’s hot summer has made temperatures rise sharply, and the heat is now hurting more than just people. Even electricity transformers, which keep the power running, are finding it hard to handle the heat.
A viral post on X shows how locals have started spraying water directly on transformers to prevent them from overheating. Buckets of water are poured over the metal structures, while a single fan is placed near each transformer to help “regulate the temperatures.” The sight looks unusual, but it reflects the desperate measures being taken to keep power flowing.
Transformers are designed to handle heavy loads, but in peak summer, when fans, coolers, and air conditioners run nonstop, the pressure rises sharply. Overheating can cause breakdowns, leading to long power cuts in already sweltering conditions. To avoid this, people are turning to quick fixes, water sprays and fans as makeshift cooling systems.
The viral images highlight how critical electricity has become in daily life. Without cooling, transformers risk failure, and without power, homes and businesses face unbearable heat. While these temporary solutions may keep the machines running for now.

Users online reacted strongly to the viral transformer cooling story. One wrote, “We’ve poured water over our cooler fins. It’s terrible for them but keeps the equipment running for just one more day.”
Another suggested safer solutions, saying, “Install coolers and directed sprinklers instead of humans doing it in dangerous environment!” A different comment praised the ingenuity, noting, “What a marvel of engineering these Indians!”
While another user offered a technical fix, adding, “These transformers need to have a custom made liquid nitrogen cooling system attached to it. Far more cost effective.”
Others questioned the practice itself, writing, “How can water and electricity come together? IMPOSSIBLE.” Another added a simple idea, saying, “Wouldn’t it be smarter to just build a canopy to block the sun?”
Some even raised safety concerns, commenting, “Please tell me they are spraying water while the electricity is on, and make sure they hit the incoming lines!” Another suggested a natural alternative, saying, “Maybe just plant trees and not spray electricity with water.”
