Vikramaditya Motwane’s Lootera remains one of those rare Hindi films that continues to be revisited for its beauty and emotional honesty. Released in 2013, the film stood apart for its gentle pacing, soulful
music and heartfelt performances, especially Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha’s. It is still widely remembered as one of Ranveer’s most layered, restrained and emotionally rich performances, opening up a side of the actor many didn’t expect to see then. Now, as Ranveer earns fresh praise for his intense role in Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar, Motwane has opened up about the actor’s untapped potential. The filmmaker, in an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha, said that Ranveer is “like a volcano waiting to erupt,” adding that his best work is still ahead of him.
Looking back at extracting a memorable performance out of Ranveer Singh in Lootera, Motwane said, “He is someone who gives so much to a role. He immerses himself, dedicates himself completely. He is fully in — 100, 1,000%. He is someone who has so much in store. I always end up feeling that there’s a real volcano inside him that’s going to erupt at some point in time. You’re just waiting for those moments to see it, with the right director guiding him. I think it will come. He is still young.”
Talking about the accolades Ranveer Singh is receiving for Dhurandhar, Motwane said, “I honestly love Ranveer, but I feel that we still haven’t seen so much of what he’s really capable of. I think he is capable of so much more, and I really believe that his best is yet to come. There’s so much inside him.”
The filmmaker, who has given audiences memorable films and series like Trapped, Jubilee and CTRL, also opened up on the year Bollywood has had and what really worked in the industry’s favour. “This whole year, whether it’s Dhurandhar, Saiyaara, Lokah or Chhaava, anything that worked honestly had one thing in common. As it’s always been, there was a sense of freshness — watching something you haven’t seen before, or haven’t seen for a while. The moment something starts to feel like, ‘we have seen this recently,’ or it becomes stale, there’s a tendency for audiences to walk away from it. I think freshness and emotional connection are the two things audiences are always looking for in a film. The moment you give them that, it works.”
Vikramaditya Motwane’s Black Warrant turned out to be one of the most talked-about OTT shows of last year. The series won big at the Filmfare OTT Awards and also found strong support from the audience. It was widely appreciated for its storytelling and performances and steadily grew in popularity through word of mouth.
