Looking her traditional best, Shilpa Shetty wore a multi-coloured Patan Patola saree by Mavuri Silks, who directly source their sarees from the weavers who are still following their tradition. With a scalloped border, the black saree featured vibrant yellows, calming blues, shocking greens, and even pinks and orange patches.
It is interlaced with Banjara work, which is a hand-stitched folk art from Rajasthan. The drape carries Patola-style motifs like elephants and parrots. However, the bright hues and mirror embellishments are a mark of Banjara-style embroidery.
A Patan Patola saree is a handwoven silk saree that originates from over 700 years ago from Patan in Gujarat. They were done by the Salvi community and were considered to be status symbols, and so were only worn by the aristocracy.
It is famous for its intricate double ikat technique, which makes the saree reversible, thereby enhancing its value. The fabric usually features symmetrical designs of flora and fauna. The sarees are known for their vibrant colours, and they are dyed using natural dyes.
Talking about this saree, Mavuri describes these handlooms “to be bringers of good luck. The making of each saree employs a laborious ‘double ikkat’ technique, which takes about six months of work.”
Shilpa Shetty styled this glamorous saree with a gold, sleeveless, embroidered blouse with a deep V-neck. For her glam, she chose to let the saree do all the talking and preferred a neutral look, with nude lipstick and brown smoky eyes. The 50-year-old actor accessorised with gold dangling earrings and a gold bejewelled kada on her wrist, while a statement gold ring rounded off the look.
